The first reference of music is found in “Rig Veda”.
A special priest of Vedic period used to sing the hymns of Rig Veda was known as “Udgatar”.
All such Hymns of RigVeda which were sung constituted “Samaveda”.
Samaveda is considered as “Veda of music” . it contents near about 16,000 Ragas and Raganis (melodies)
The last part of samaVeda is known as Gandharva Veda which is considered as a “rule book” or “grammar book” of music.
Later “Natya Shastra” was written which is considered the earliest treatise on music.

संगीत का सर्वप्रथम उल्लेख “ऋग्वेद” में मिलता है।
वैदिक काल का एक विशेष पुजारी जो ऋग्वेद की ऋचाओं का गायन करता था उसे “उदगातार” के नाम से जाना जाता था।
ऋग्वेद के ऐसे सभी मंत्र जो गाए जाते थे, “सामवेद” कहलाते थे।
सामवेद को “संगीत का वेद” माना जाता है। इसमें लगभग 16,000 राग और रागनी (धुन) शामिल हैं
सामवेद के अंतिम भाग को गंधर्व वेद के रूप में जाना जाता है जिसे संगीत की “नियम पुस्तक” या “व्याकरण पुस्तक” माना जाता है।
बाद में “नाट्य शास्त्र” लिखा गया जिसे संगीत का सबसे पहला ग्रंथ माना जाता है।
